Get to know your Hair’s Structure

I used to be very confused with the differences between hair structures, types of hair, and hair textures. But I believe anyone can learn anything if they set their minds to it, and now I’ve become a hair expert. Ok, that’s an exaggeration, but at least I’ve become aware of what my hair needs because I know what it’s made of, and I’ve learned the basics of what it requires to look and feel healthy every day.

The hair structure is one (if not the most important) of the basics you need to know to understand what’s best for the hair in general.

Each hair shaft has three layers

Hair Structure | The Hair Routine

  1. The medulla is the inner layer of the hair, responsible for holding DNA that can tell the species type, and part of the body where it came from.
  2. The cortex surrounds the medulla, and it is what forms your hair´s main bulk. It determines the strength and elasticity of your hair, as well as the color and shape.
  3. The cuticle is the protective layer that looks like fish scales or rooftop tiles that open and close, letting in different amounts of moisture. If it is kept healthy, your outer layer gives shine and protects the inner layers from damage.

The hair structure varies from person to person, and this depends mainly on genetics. For example, people with thin hair may not even have a medulla in all strands of hair, while people with thicker hair usually have all three layers. Some types of hair tend to hold moisture better than others, and some don’t. If you have hair that tends to break easily you have to be more careful with it, add moisture and protect it from things that increase breakage.

The structure of your hair is something you are born with and cannot change, so love it and take care of it in sickness and in health.
