7 Winter Hair Care Tips

A Guide to Take Care of Your Hair This Winter

Winter is long, cold, and wet and struggling with hair during these colder months is normal. Just like with heat, extreme cold has negative effects on the hair like dryness, split ends, and static. Luckily, we've prepared an essential hair care survival guide for those colder days.

How to keep hair healthy and hydrated during the winter

1. Prevent exposure. Protect your hair like you protect your hands from the cold. Wearing your hair in a protective style is the best way to protect the strands from extreme temperature. You can style it in a braid or a low bun tucked into your winter coat. Be aware that synthetic fabrics tend to create more static and damage; use a silk cap under your winter beanie to avoid breakage.

 2. Avoid hot water. It feels good to warm up by stepping into a steaming hot shower. However, water and steam suck out the moisture from the hair, making it more vulnerable to breakage. Warm yourself up with a hot bath or shower water, but use lukewarm or cold water to wash and rinse off your hair.  Cool water seals down the cuticles making the hair look shinier.

3. Extend hair washing days. Shampoo removes away the natural oils that do the job of protecting the strands. Winter is the perfect time to start spreading out washing days and swiftly concealing any bad hair days under the coat. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and a conditioner with no silicones to avoid further irritating the scalp and drying out the strands. We recommend the Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner for hair washes.

4. Don’t go out with wet hair. When hair is wet, it’s 3 times more fragile than when it’s dry. Never -and I mean never- go outside with wet or humid hair: it can freeze and break! Although we don’t recommend using heat, we do recommend drying it before going out. Blow dry your hair on low or medium heat.

5. Give hair extra love and care during these months. Conditioning the hair in the winter is very important to help add hydration back into it. Being consistent with moisturizing the hair can be done in many ways: using a lightweight balancing conditioner that can work as a leave-in after the shower, deep conditioning treatments that include locking moisture ingredients, or sealing the ends with your favorite hair oil when it starts to feel frizzy.

 6. Invest in a humidifier. The cold makes us crank up our heaters and it dries up the environment we live in, making both our hair and skin lose moisture. You can add moisture back into the air by setting a humidifier in the room you are in most often.

7. Eliminate static hair. Hair conducts energy and when there is an imbalance of ions (two positive charges that repel each other) static energy causes the hairs to stand on end. Avoid heat at all costs. Blow dryers and straighteners completely dry out the hair from any water stored in the strands. Protect it by finishing with a little bit of cold-pressed marula or grapeseed oil. Finally, we recommend switching out your plastic brush or comb to one that is made out of wood or bamboo to eliminate extra static.

Take this time to really focus on taking care of your hair, follow your personalized Hair Routine -the method that tells you which essential elements your hair needs-, and slowly eliminate the little things that you know are damaging your strands.
