All the Benefits of Grapeseed Oil for Your Hair
Grapeseed Oil for Hair: What are the benefits?
As its name suggests, grapeseed oil is obtained from the seeds of grapes that were used to make wine. Grapeseed oil is highly sought after for its cosmetic properties in the skin care industry and, most recently, in the hair care industry especially for use in hair growth supplements.
Grapeseed oil is lighter than coconut or olive oil and is non-comedogenic. This means it does not clog pores, making it suitable for every skin type including acne-prone skin. It’s a great moisturizer and it nurtures the strands from the scalp to the ends, making it the ideal ingredient for a well-rounded hair care routine.
The reason behind its magic
Its beneficial properties come from the Omega-6 fatty acids and the nutrients and minerals found in it such as linoleic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and vitamin E.
Omega-6 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and help relieve skin and scalp issues that cause mild to severe itchiness. They also have antimicrobial properties and are used to treat acne outbreaks or dandruff caused by bacteria. They contain a powerful antioxidant called proanthocyanidin that helps even out skin tone when used frequently.
Vitamin E helps restore and increase skin hydration, improving its viscoelasticity by restoring and preserving water that has been lost. It has also been claimed to make skin softer. This type of antioxidant helps fight against the free radicals that damage our skin and hair cells and that cause aging signs (wrinkles, pigmentation, dullness) to appear prematurely.
Linoleic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve the top and middle skin layers.
Finally, polyunsaturated fatty acids help protect the skin and hair strands from damage caused by UV rays.
Grapeseed Oil for Hair Growth
Not only is grapeseed oil a great antiallergenic, but it’s also a great antihistamine and anti inflammatory and also acts as an antioxidant. On top of that, grapeseed oil has the ability to inhibit DHT (dihydrotestosterone), so it basically helps slow down the process of hair loss.
Grapeseed oil makes for a great heat protectant because it is adsorbed - rather than absorbed - creating a protective layer for the hair strands that protects them from rough friction that can cause breakage and hair loss.
(Adsorption is the ability of a substance to sit on the outer layer of the skin or outside the cuticle of the hair.)
